Netflix shows you don’t want to miss

Rukhmah Nauman, Staff Reporter

Netflix will always have something for everyone, but there are plenty of “flops” or disappointing shows to watch out for. I’m always glad when a friend recommends a show to me because I usually end up liking it. So, here are some television shows on Netflix I recommend for teens that won’t be a waste of your time.

“Gilmore Girls”

Rating: TV-14

My rating: 4.7/5

“Gilmore Girls” is a comedy-drama television series about a young mother, Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham), and her brilliant coming-of-age daughter, Lorelai (Rory) Gilmore (Alexis Bledel). The series thoroughly demonstrates the ups and downs of their mother-daughter relationship and their lifestyle in the fictional town Stars Hollow. I think this series is very comforting because of the way everyone in Stars Hollow is there for them. No matter how much Lorelai and Rory fight and regardless of what is going on in their lives, in the end, they are best friends and support each other. “Gilmore Girls” also includes the idea that life is full of risks and that you must take them to lead to the right path.

“I Am Not Okay With This”

Rating: TV-MA

My rating: 4.7/5

I would recommend the show “I Am Not Okay With This” because the acting is outstanding and feels so real. The main character is Sydney (Sophia Lillis). Sydney’s personality is so realistic and extremely relatable since she is a teenager dealing with teenage issues like anxiety, stress and figuring out her sexual identity. There is also an addition of darkness to the show as Sydney tries to suppress her feelings to stop her uncontrollable psychokinesis (the ability to control things with your mind). If you choose to watch this show I assure you: the ending will blow your mind.
Disclaimer: Language, mild sexual content and blood.

Anne With An E

Rating: TV-PG

My rating: 4.9/5

“Anne With An E” is a re-imagining of the classic “Anne of Green Gables” series. It is by far one of my favorite shows because it is deep and sentimental. It takes place during the late 1890s and is about an orphan girl named Anne (Amybeth McNulty) being brought into a home of two lonely siblings, Matthew Cuthbert (R.H. Thompson) and Marilla Cuthbert (Geraldine James). Anne just wants to be loved and find her place in the world. All her life she has been bullied and felt misplaced because of her interests and the way she looks. As she is discovering herself at Green Gables, she faces life problems such as sexism, racism and homophobia towards herself and the people she loves. Although it isn’t a true story, it opened my eyes to different perspectives and how important family can be. I would recommend it to people aged 12+.

Outer Banks

Rating: TV-MA

My rating: 4.7/5

“Outer Banks” is one of the best coming of age shows to watch. I first assumed it would be a basic sappy teen-drama kind of show but it’s something better! I say this because the show keeps me hooked; it’s a perfect mix of drama, action, humor and sadness. Every one of the Pogue’s backstories is explained to show their personal development. All of their backstories are very important and make you love them even more by knowing how brave they have grown up to be. The plot twists are amazing and keep you excited for every new season. This show also reflects on how important friendship is. Overall, I highly recommend this show. I would say this is a casual, binge-worthy show to watch.
